Holidays & Tours to
The Deep South

The Deep South. A region of the USA steeped in a turbulent history. The film ‘Gone with the Wind’ romanticised the antebellum plantation life and slavery, a deep-rooted way of life which divided a nation and led to the American Civil War, when the South defended this lifestyle fiercely. A century later The Deep South was the birthplace of the Civil Rights Movement, and the whole of America’s culture and politics changed forever. The region also beats to the rhythm of America’s music and you’ll find it everywhere – Jazz in the streets of New Orleans, Blues in Memphis, and Country in the music halls of Nashville, and Rock & Roll and Gospel can also trace their roots to the South. The King of Rock & Roll, Elvis Presley, still draws visitors in their millions each year and his famous home in Memphis is a pilgrimage for fans.

DEEP SOUTH USA holidays

To experience the history and culture of the Deep South, is to experience America’s history and culture. Millington Travel recommend a self-drive holiday which we can help arrange for you, suggesting places to visit and stay, or we can select your ideal escorted tour if you’d like someone else to do the driving.

Millington Travel’s Top Ten sights and sounds in the Deep South

  1. Graceland. The home of Elvis Presley and now a moving tribute to the life and work of The King.
  2. The French Quarter, New Orleans. Fully restored after Hurricane Katrina, this district of New Orleans is full of romantic southern charm.
  3. Civil War Battlefields. Fierce battles were fought all across the southern states. See how these battles changed America forever.
  4. The National Civil rights Museum. A powerful tribute to Martin Luther King, housed in the motel where he was assassinated.
  5. The Great Smoky Mountains. America’s most visited National Park, renowned for its beauty, especially in Autumn when the leaves turn a blazing red & gold.
  6. Grand Ole Opry. Nashville’s most famous music hall. Whenever you visit you’re bound to catch one the regions biggest stars.
  7. Dollywood. Yes, that’s right, Dolly Parton has her very own theme park on the edge of the Smoky Mountains at Pigeon Forge, Tennessee.
  8. The Natchez Trace Parkway. 444 miles long, running through Tennessee and Mississippi this National Scenic Byway commemorates the ancient route once taken by people and animals, with specific locations to enter and exit the route.
  9. Mississippi Steamboat Cruise. What better way is there to experience the might of the Mississippi River than aboard a traditional paddle steamer.
  10. Baton Rouge & Plantation Hopping. Baton Rouge, the capital of Louisiana is known as plantation country, and an hour in one of the pre-Civil War Antebellum homes will transport you back 200 years to a time far removed from the modern-day Deep South.

When to go?

The Southern USA enjoys mild winters and is rarely very cold so this is a great time to visit for a touring holiday when prices are cheaper and there are fewer visitors. Summers here are very hot and humid, with short sharp rain showers. Like many places, we think the best time to go is, April to June, and September to November, when you’ll also benefit from more comfortable temperatures and cheaper prices.
