Holidays & Tours to
New England

The Northeast corner of the USA, comprising the states of New Hampshire, Vermont, Rhode Island, Massachusetts, Connecticut, and Maine, is collectively known as New England. This region is surprising because although small, it is so varied. You can laze on the beach in summer and ski in the mountains in winter. The rugged coastline contains beautiful fishing harbors and fine beaches, and the rolling hills rise gently into the Mountains of Vermont and New Hampshire. You’ll discover delightful villages with covered bridges and whitewashed churches, but also big-city shopping and bright lights. Also, this is the region of the USA where the Pilgrims first landed, so history is also a huge draw for visitors.

New England is perfect touring country. Whether you decide to do this as an escorted coach tour, or just take to the road in a hire-car, with each bend in the road comes new surprises. The small villages are an absolute delight with Inns and B&B’s the accommodation of choice. The people are friendly and the scenery stunning. From Connecticut in the South to the border with Canada, New England is quite remarkable in every way.

Then there is the Fall. Nowhere will you find such a dazzling display of natural colour as the Aspen, Maple, beech, Ash & Cherry trees among others change colour, stretching for miles covering the hills with fiery shades of yellow, orange and red. This isn’t just leaves.. this is nature in all its glorious magnificence, and what lies before you will stay with you forever.

Millington Travel would love you to experience New England, and we are sure you will return with some very long lasting memories.

Millington Travel’s Top Ten things to see and do in New England

  1. Deerfield – First settled in 1669, Deerfield retains its original size and town plan and is now a National Historic Landmark offering a unique perspective on the life of the early New Englanders.
  2. Hancock – Established in 1791, Hancock was the third of 19 shaker villages in the USA. It is now a museum and offers a unique insight into the Shaker lifestyle under the leadership of  ‘Mother’ Ann Lee.
  3. Woodstock – Named as the ‘quintessential’ New England village, Woodstock has it all. Full of everything that is quaint about New England, and filled with vintage Americana, if you only visit one place make it Woodstock!
  4. Mystic Seaport – For lovers of all things to do with the sea, Mystic Seaport is sure to delight. This Connecticut harbor is the largest maritime museum in the world with 19 preserved vessels. The Seaport and the neighboring village of Mystic have also been used in film sets including Mystic Pizza and Amistad.
  5. Cape Cod – Quaint villages with little shops and boutiques, fish restaurants, fabulous beaches, lighthouses, and relaxed pace make this area well worth a visit.
  6. Martha’s Vineyard – Take the ferry and visit this tiny Island which remains one one of New Englands most picturesque destinations with little seaside towns and wonderful beaches.
  7. North Conway – Scenery is the name of the game up here in New Hampshire with the North Conway Scenic Railroad, and the start of the Kancamagus Highway – arguably the most scenic highway in the USA, an incredible drive to North Woodstock with plenty of stopping off points along the way.
  8. Boston – New England’s gateway city is a destination in its own right with fabulous shopping, an exciting history, wonderful architecture and the famed Freedom Trail.
  9. Visit the Mayflower II and Plymouth Rock. At Plymouth, Massachusetts is a full-scale replica of the ship they say changed the world. Here you can learn about the 66-day transatlantic voyage of the Pilgrim Fathers and see Plymouth Rock which commemorated their arrival.
  10. Harvard University. Cross over the Charles River from Boston to Cambridge, and you’ll be able to experience a fascinating insight into life at this most distinguished University, whose past students include Theodore Roosevelt, Franklin D Roosevelt, John F Kennedy, Barack Obama, Bill Gates, and many other famous politicians, businessmen, and Hollywood actors.

When to go?

New England has cold winters, and mild to hot summers. January to April is the ski season, and once the snow melts, this region is great for touring, so hit the road any time from May to November. Spring is the cheapest time to visit and July & August are the main holiday season so beaches and attractions are busy. However, New England really comes into its own in mid-late September when those leaves turn the landscape into a blaze of colour.

Food & Drink

New England is the home of the micro-brewery in the USA and they are everywhere, but particularly in the urban centers of Boston, Portland and Hartford. Maple Syrup is also produced here in the very short season at the end of winter. Fish is high up on any menu in these states, and while meat is popular it’s less prominent than elsewhere.

Millington Travel absolutely loves New England. It is so unique among regions of the USA and the variety makes it a special place where you can experience different types of the holiday all in one. Give our experts a call today to help you plan your own trip to this wonderful destination.
