Tasmania or Tassie as it is known to the locals is the smallest state of Australia with stunning landscapes and dramatic coastlines. Largely untouched by mass tourism, Tasmania has a rugged natural beauty not found anywhere else in Australia. There is a surprising amount to see and do here, with history, unspoiled beaches, spectacular mountains and lakes, friendly villages and compact cities. Tasmania can easily take a week to ten days to visit in full and is well worth a stop on any Australian itinerary. Visitors often comment it was a favorite part of their trip and who are we to argue!
The island is perfect for a touring holiday or self-drive with most flights going into Hobart or Launceston. Whether you decide to travel by car and stay in charming hotels, or by camper van, Tasmania is very easy to get around, and short distances help. When to go?
Tasmania’s climate is very similar to the UK with four seasons but without the intense heat experienced elsewhere in Australia. With long lazy days and pleasant temperatures, the summer months of December to March are the best, though some of the west coast rainforests can be wet all year with the inland mountains receiving a dusting of snow each winter.
